WA state golfers Spencer Harrison and Katie Seol completed a thrilling double as they landed respective QLD and Victorian Junior Amateur titles.
First over the line was Harrison (above right), who won his first significant interstate title at the Queensland Junior Boys Championship.
The Royal Perth teen was in contention throughout the week at Nudgee Golf Club but moved clear of the field after consecutive four-under-par 68s in his second and third rounds.
This gave Harrison a four-stroke advantage with 18 holes to play, and while that gap was narrowed, Harrison still had enough in reserve as he carded a two-over-par 74 to win by two at -7 for the championship.
“I’m super happy to win my last interstate junior event in Australia,” Harrison told GolfWA.
“For me, this one proves I’m doing all the right things. It’s nice to see hard work pay off, and it keeps you wanting more.”
The victory improved on Harrison’s third-place finish in last year’s QLD Boys’ championship and marks his first WAGR title since the 2024 Mandurah Amateur Open.
Elsewhere in the field, Royal Perth’s Isabella Leniartek finished T15th in the girls’ event, which was dominated by Peninsula Kingswood’s Feiyu Xing.
Seol overhauls Houston in Victoria
A good day for WA juniors got better a couple of hours later as Katie Seol (pictured top left) secured the girls’ championship crown at the Victorian Junior Amateur.
The Cottesloe golfer had gone head-to-head with state teammate Kortni Houston (Lakelands CC) throughout the rain-affected championship, and it was Houston who held a two-stroke lead heading into the final round.
Seol, however, closed with a tigerish one-under-par 71 at Tocumwal Golf Club, while Houston faded to a 76.
The five-shot swing saw Seol top the leaderboard at -3 for the championship, one clear of the fast-finishing Sophie Tong, with Houston third, a further shot back. Final scores here.
“It feels really nice to get the win,” said a relieved Seol. “My putting was really bad, but my long game was okay, so I think that’s how I got the win.”
Both Seol and Harrison will be amongst the hot favourites to win on home soil this week at the Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championships of WA.
Lakelands Country Club hosts this year’s 36-hole stroke play event on July 6 and 7. You’ll be able to follow the scoring on the GolfWA website and social channels.
