Six of the season’s nine Major championships have already been and gone – but the good news is that there are two more to enjoy in July.
It’s also a big month for amateur golf on WA soil as the winter golf season really kicks off. Here we outline the golf events to tune into or get involved in this July…
Major championships
For many golf fans, it’s the sporting event of the year and the 153rd Open Championship looks set to be absolutely gripping.
The final men’s Major of the year takes place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland from July 17-20, with multiple intriguing storylines potentially playing out.
Can Rory claim an emotional win on home soil? Will Scottie Scheffler take another step towards his own career Grand Slam? Can any of the Aussie contingent make a run for the Claret Jug?
As well as Min Woo Lee, Western Australian supporters can get behind Ryan Peake and Curtis Luck (pictured above), who both qualified via their efforts on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia’s 2024-25 season.
They join Adam Scott, Jason Day, Cam Smith, Marc Leishman and reigning WA Open champion Elvis Smylie as the other Aussies confirmed in the field, with more potentially coming through Final Qualifying on July 2. Xander Schauffele defends.
Prior to that, the fourth women’s Major of the year, the Amundi Evian Championship, will be held at Evian Resort, France, from July 10-13.
Co-sanctioned between the LPGA and Ladies European Tour, 132 players will contest the US$8m prize pot, with Japan’s defending champion Ayaka Furue in their sights.
Fresh from her victory at the Women’s PGA Championship, Minjee Lee will be amongst the red-hot favourites at the event where she made her Major breakthrough in 2021 (pictured above).
Hannah Green will be hoping to bounce back after a disappointing Women’s PGA, although Evian Resort hasn’t been a happy hunting ground, with Green racking up only one top-30 finish in six outings.
WA’s Hira Naveed also makes the field and will look to build on her showing at the Women’s PGA, where she made a cut in a Major championship for the first time.
The other Aussies to look out for are Steph Kyriacou, Grace Kim, Karis Davidson, Robyn Choi, Gabi Ruffels and Cassie Porter.
Both Majors will be televised on Foxtel and Kayo.
Amateur golf
A big month for amateur golf in WA, July features two significant junior events, as well as the culmination of the men’s pennants season.
The Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championships of WA (July 7-8) and the Junior Masters of WA (July 14-15) take place in back-to-back weeks in the school holidays and represent two of GolfWA’s three ‘Junior Majors’.
Isabella Leniartek (pictured above) won both of the girls’ championships last year and will again be amongst the title favourites, although she could be pushed all the way by state teammates Kortni Houston, Halia Edwards, Katie Seol and Aileen Sirait.
Things are more open in the boys’ events with both reigning champions absent. Spencer Harrison, winner of the Boys’ Junior Am at Gosnells in 2024, will be representing Australia in the US at the time, while Ben Cranny is unable to defend his Junior Masters title having turned 18.
With Josiah Edwards also having ‘aged out’ of junior events, expect the likes of Nate Johnson, Krishav Sheth, Ollie Marsh, Liam Sullivan, Thomas Pyke and Declan Pereira to be there or thereabouts.
Men’s Pennants continues throughout the month and concludes on Sunday, July 27. It’s early days still, but Joondalup are putting up a strong defence of their Division 1 title having gone unbeaten in their three matches so far. View the standings here.
Elsewhere, the GolfWA Provincial Tournament for women with handicaps of 21.9 or lower takes place at Moora Lake View Golf Club from July 11-13 (registration closes on July 2); while there are three events on the Crunch&Sip Junior Tour on July 7, 14 and 15. Register here.
