The golfing community is deeply saddened to advise of the passing of Lyndsay Stephen. Lyndsay passed away this morning aged 64 following a long battle with cancer.
Lyndsay’s career in golf began as PGA Trainee at Lake Karrinyup Country Club under the tutelage of PGA Professional Jock Borthwick.
Known as great character on and off the golf course, success came early in Lyndsay’s career when he won his first professional event on the PGA Tour of Australasia in February of 1981 at the South Australian Open with a three-stroke victory over Rodger Davis. His second Tour win came in his home state of WA with a nine-stroke victory over Ian Stanley at the 1986 Nedlands Masters.
In 1985 Lyndsay joined the European Tour where he recorded a top-10 result in his first appearance at the Jersey Open, one of many top-ranking finishes posted throughout his career.
After many years competing in Europe Lyndsay turned his focus to coaching in the early 1990s while also regularly appearing on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
In his first year on the PGA Legends Tour Lyndsay won the Australian Senior PGA Championship by one stroke over Delroy Cambridge with a birdie on the final hole. He would become a regular on the PGA Legends Tour and European Senior Tour from 2010.
Lyndsay was recently made one of the first Life Members of Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club alongside PGA Life Member Len Thomas for his contributions to the club, and will be remembered for his quick wit, his outstanding golf game and as a great mate to many Members of the PGA.
