WA state golfers George Barclay and Spencer Harrison have topped the Australian Men’s and Boys’ Orders of Merit for the 2024-25 season.
Joondalup Country Club ace Barclay, aged 20, enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning his first open interstate title at the Victorian Amateur Championship in May, before a runner-up spot at the South Australian Amateur Championship in September.
Barclay (above left) amassed 1,311 Order of Merit points from 17 events, leaving him 29 points clear of Royal Queensland’s Lincoln Morgan in the standings.
“I’m really proud to be the Order of Merit winner,” Barclay told GolfWA. “I’ve worked hard on and of the course this year and it’s good to see the hard work has paid off. Huge thanks to my coach David Milne for his support.”
Barclay’s state teammate Josiah Edwards — the man who beat Barclay to the SA state crown — was the next-highest WA player in the rankings in 9th position after a season that also saw him nab the Port Phillip Open Amateur in May.
Meanwhile, Spencer Harrison‘s star continues to rise after he tied up the Australian Boys’ Order of Merit following a runner-up finish in 2023-24.
The 17-year-old Royal Perth product (above right) earned 1,142 ranking points from seven events to finish an impressive 109 points clear of runner-up Malachy Marshall (Kooyonga GC).
“I played well throughout the year in a range of places, so I feel as though winning the Order of Merit is a great reward for my consistency this year,” Harrison told GolfWA.
“It will build on my confidence going into next year where I’ll look to continue my growth.”
In good reading for WA golfers, Ollie Marsh (Wanneroo GC) was third in the standings, with Mason Burr (Gosnells GC) and Nate Johnson (Joondalup CC) 7th and 10th respectively.
GolfWA High Performance Manager Rick Kulacz paid tribute to both Barclay and Harrison, saying: “This is a fantastic achievement for both players.
“It highlights their consistent performance at a strong level over the past year and the continued growth they’re showing with every event they play.”
Elsewhere, Gosnells’ Aileen Sirait was the highest-placed WA golfer in the Girls’ standings in 10th, with Amanda Gan (Royal Fremantle) the leading WA golfer in the Women’s Order of Merit in 17th place, despite missing much of the season with injury.
WA had two players in the Senior Men’s Order of Merit top 10 in Michael Lucas (Harvey GC, 2nd) and Peter Bennett (Royal Perth, 8th), while Colette Nalder (Royal Perth) was WA’s best-placed in the Senior Women’s rankings in 13th position.
