The curtain finally falls on Major championship season in August, while the PGA Tour season also comes to an end with the FedExCup Playoffs.
Domestically, the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia season tees off in PNG and there are three WA state championships to be decided. Here we outline the golf events to be aware of this August…
Major championships
The final Major of the season – the AIG Women’s British Open – commences on Thursday and will conclude on Sunday, August 3.
This year’s championship heads to Wales for the first time and will be staged over Royal Porthcawl’s historic seaside links.
Since being granted Major status in 2001, the only Aussie to have tasted success in the championship is Karrie Webb, back in 2002, although Rachel Hetherington and Katherine Hull went close in the 2000s.
Minjee Lee (pictured) looks like the most likely Australian contender this year and victory would wrap up a Career Grand Slam and grant her a second Major of 2025.
She has five top-10 finishes at the event in 11 attempts, with a best of third at Royal Troon in 2020. Now back to her best form, Lee will start amongst the favourites.
By her own admission, Hannah Green’s best chance of contending at a British Open will come at a parkland course rather than a links, and her indifferent form in the big events in 2025 ranks her amongst the outsiders.
Kirsten Rudgeley makes a welcome return to Major championship golf having made her debut in this event as an amateur back in 2021. She qualified via her top-15 finish in the 2024 season-ending LET Order of Merit.
The Mount Lawley ace hasn’t been her usual consistent self in 2025, but a T5th finish at the recent Women’s Irish Open suggests she could be turning a corner.
Hira Naveed is the final West Aussie in the field having come through Final Qualifying on Monday. The 27-year-old is still finding her feet at the top level and will be contesting her eighth Major championship.
She missed the cut in last year’s event but played all four rounds at both the Women’s PGA Championship and Evian Masters and will be looking for a best Major finish in Wales.
The other Australians teeing it up in Wales are Evian Masters winner Grace Kim, Steph Kyriacou, Cassie Porter, Kirsten Rudgeley, Karis Davidson and Gabi Ruffels. Lydia Ko defends.
All four rounds of the AIG Women’s Open will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo.
PGA Tour
We’re at the business end of the PGA Tour season now, with only one counting event left (this weekend’s Wyndham Championship) for players to earn their way into the big-money FedExCup Playoffs.
The top 70 on the rankings come Sunday night will qualify for the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug 7-10); with the field whittled down to 50 for the BMW Championship (Aug 14-17) and 30 for the Tour Championship (Aug 21-24).
Currently in 49th place in the FedExCup Standings, Min Woo Lee (pictured) is pretty much guaranteed to make the playoffs, as is former Lakelands and Joondalup member Aldrich Potgieter (42nd).
Despite a breakthrough win earlier this season, Karl Vilips needs a good week at the Wyndham Championship to have a chance of making the playoffs. He’s currently in 83rd position.
Jason Day (36th) and Kiwi Ryan Fox (31st) are riding sufficiently high in the rankings to at least make the St. Jude Championship, but there’s work to do for Cam Davis (67th) and Adam Scott (85th), both of whom will play the Wyndham in a last-ditch bid to extend their seasons.
Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia
The domestic tour season commences with the curtain-raising PNG Open at Royal Port Moresby from August 14-17, prior to the return of the NT PGA Championship two weeks later.
With decent purses of $225,000 and $200,000 respectively, a flying start to the season can set players up nicely to earn their places at the Aussie majors in November and December.
Amongst the WA players entered into one or both events are tour winners Jordan Doull, Braden Becker, Jarryd Felton and Daniel Fox, while rookies Silvester Tan and Jose de Sousa will also tee it up on tour for the first time.
Amateur golf
Three state championships will be decided in August: the Men’s and Women’s Foursomes Amateur Championships, and the Aglime Sand Greens Championship.
The Foursomes Championships take place this Sunday, August 3, at Mandurah Country Club. Sixty pairings will compete over 36 holes in what could be wet and windy conditions.
Sophie Williams & Amie Phobubpa return to defend their women’s title, while Liam Sullivan & Declan Pereira will look to go back-to-back in the men’s.
With many of the great and the good of the WA amateur game competing, this should be another fun and highly competitive day’s golf. View the draw here.
The following week will see the 45th Sand Greens Championship of WA unfold at Northam Country Club.
Following two days of team events, the 36-hole stroke play championship will take place on August 10-11, with a huge field hoping to unseat Adam Davey as champion.
With past winners including Ryan Peake, Stephen Leaney, Ritchie Smith and Brady Watt, this is high-calibre, fiercely competitive golf with a heart, as money will be raised for Northam Men’s Shed throughout the event.
