Mount Lawley GC’s senior men have created a piece of history, leading their club to the Division 1 Pennant for the first time.
Having secured three wins and a draw from their opening four Division matches, Mount Lawley entered into this week’s final match against Cottesloe GC knowing that a halved match would be good enough to secure their breakthrough title.
Things are rarely straightforward in match play golf, however, and Cottesloe made the most of home advantage to post a 3.5-1.5 win to set Mount Lawley hearts aflutter.
This left the door ajar for Lakelands, who, having amassed six points from four matches, needed a win against Royal Fremantle to have any chance of sneaking the Pennant themselves.
In what proved to be a nail-biting encounter, Royal Fremantle got over the line thanks to crucial, narrow victories for Scottie Baker and Brett Roberts.
Their 3.5-1.5 win saw them leapfrog Lakelands into second place overall and hand a famous victory to Mount Lawley, who were represented by Rick McKenna, David Dunstan, Brett Gossage, Matt Timbrell, Ian Gregory, Steve Plummer and captain John Ryan over the course of the season.
As well as deciding the title-winners, the final round also saw three teams fighting to avoid relegation, with Hartfield ultimately ending the season at the foot of the table after halving their final match against Royal Perth.
They will be replaced in the top flight next year by Joondalup Country Club, who went unbeaten through the Division 2 season, winning four matches and drawing one to top the standings ahead of Wanneroo.
The Men’s Senior Pennants season will wrap up next week with the north/south finals of the 4BBB competition at Wanneroo and The Vines.
