Minjee Lee herb Elliott Medal

Minjee Lee has shared the Herb Elliott Medal with AFL star Patrick Cripps at the WA Hall of Champions awards dinner.

The medal recognises inspirational sporting performances by Western Australians over the previous 12 months, during which time Lee won her third Major Championship at the Women’s PGA Championship in June.

“Thank you to the WA Hall of Champions for giving me this great honour. I am a very proud Western Australian and really honoured to win the medal,” said Lee via video link, with her award accepted on her behalf by long-time coach Ritchie Smith.

Lee also won the inaugural Herb Elliott Medal in 2015 and shared the achievement this year with Carlton skipper Cripps, who claimed his second Brownlow Medal in late 2024 with a record 45 points.

The other finalists were cyclist Luke Durbridge and Jai Hindley (cycling); Leah O’Brien (athletics); Kyle Lee (open water swimming); the Perth Thundersticks (hockey); Alessandro Circati (soccer); and Alex Saffy (Para swimming).

Elliott is a legendary figure in WA sport, whose feats include winning 1500m gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics in a world record time. Previous winners of the Herb Elliott Medal include WA golfers Curtis Luck (2016) and Hannah Green (2019).

Lee’s outstanding year has already seen her become the first two-time winner of the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award after a season of consistent excellence in Major championships – an award she picked up at this week’s LPGA Awards in Florida.

The Royal Fremantle star will also be hot favourite to land the Greg Norman Medal for Australia’s best golfer at the PGA of Australia Awards in QLD at the end of November, having won it three times in the past, most recently in 2023.
