Golf Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) have launched a new national governance education program specifically designed to strengthen the leadership capability of golf club directors, administrators and leaders.
The Golf Australia Club Governance Program provides a clear development pathway, from a free Governance Awareness Webinar, through to a self-paced online Governance Essentials course.
Affiliated clubs can also access face-to-face AICD-led programs including the Governance Foundations for NFP Directors course and the flagship Company Directors Course and GAICD accreditation.
Education streams are contextualised for the golf industry using real club scenarios and are available at subsidised rates through the partnership.
With more than 11,000 volunteer directors serving across Australian golf clubs, the program has the potential to become one of the largest volunteer director and committee development programs in Australian sport.
The announcement of the Club Governance Program comes as clubs that participated in a successful pilot scheme in 2025 are already moving to make governance training a mandatory requirement for all incoming board members.
The pilot program engaged nearly 800 club leaders from over 360 clubs nationally and helped more than half of participants drive changes at their club as a direct result of the training.
In addition, 73% of participants reported improved governance confidence and 90% recommended the program to other clubs.
Brett Symons, GolfWA’s Clubs & Facilities Manager, urged all WA clubs to give serious consideration to enrolling in the program.
“When directors and committee members improve their governance skills, they make better decisions and the clubs they serve are stronger for it,” he said.
