Leishman to make WA Open debut in October

Marc Leishman WA Open

Marc Leishman will begin his warm-up for the Aussie summer of golf at the Nexus Advisernet Bowra & O’Dea WA Open in October.

The LIV Golf star has committed to WA’s showpiece event ahead of appearances at the BMW Australian PGA Championship and men’s Australian Open in November and December.

Having already enjoyed a LIV tour win in Miami and two Major championship appearances in 2025, Leishman will headline the field at the 101st WA Open, which takes place at Mount Lawley Golf Club from October 16-19.

Although he’s known for being a big supporter of the domestic game, this year will mark Leishman’s first-ever appearance at the WA Open and he says he’s relishing the prospect of performing in front of local fans.

“We get a pretty tidy off season actually now playing on LIV Golf, so It’s a great opportunity to get back to Australia, to play in [the WA Open] and hopefully win that event,” he said.

“I’m loving my golf at the moment, so want to play as much as I can while still managing myself and spending time with the family. While I’m enjoying my golf, I want to play, so I’m really excited to get back to Mount Lawley and I’ve heard that the redo is pretty impressive.

“It’s been over 20 years since I’ve played Mount Lawley, but I’ve got great memories there. I remember the course being in unbelievably good condition.”

Assuming he brings his A-Game on his trip to the West, Leishman expects to put on quite a show for WA golf fans who show up to watch him in person.

“Well, hopefully I’ll be making a lot of birdies,” he said. “I’ll be fairly relaxed, laid back, but I would assume, without knowing the course too much, it’ll be a fairly aggressive style of golf.

“I’m enjoying my golf, so hopefully there’ll be a lot of smiles. We’ll wait and see I guess, but I really embrace the fact that being a professional golfer is being an entertainer. I like to entertain, so I’d say I’ll be entertaining [to watch].”

Marc Leishman WA Open

Marc Leishman is an enormously popular figure for Australian golf fans

According to GolfWA Chief Executive Gary Thomas, Leishman’s presence in the WA Open field is a great boost for Western Australian golf and its fans.

“Marc has played some of the best golf of his career over the last 12 months and will inevitably be amongst the hot favourites to lift the Roy Paxton Bowl at the WA Open,” he said.

“Marc’s involvement is not only a great opportunity for local golf fans to witness him in action close-up, but also a rare opportunity for many of our rising talents to compete alongside one of the best golfers in the world and see how their games stack up.

“It’s great to see an established talent like Marc support the growth of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and we’re very excited to see how he’ll perform at Mount Lawley.”

Following his WA sojourn, 41-year-old Leishman will compete at the BMW Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland from November 27-30; and the men’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne from December 4-7.

The Nexus Advisernet Bowra & O’Dea WA Open takes place at Mount Lawley Golf Club from October 16-19. Entry is free. Full details on the event can be found here.
