Former Chairman Greg Higham was awarded Life Membership of GolfWA at November’s Annual General Meeting.
Royal Perth member Higham served as a Director of GolfWA for more than 11 years between 2013-25, with his tenure including seven years as Chair from 2017.
Higham’s service to GolfWA also included stints on the WA Open, Governance and Club Health Committees, and he moved into the Deputy Chair for 12 months after standing down as Chair in 2024.
In addition, Higham served on Golf Australia’s Nominations Committee from 2023-24 and played an integral role in GolfWA’s transition into a State Services Agreement with Golf Australia last year.
His nomination for Life Membership was unanimously backed by the Board of GolfWA, with Higham admitting that he was humbled to receive the honour.
“My time at GolfWA has been extremely fulfilling and has been made especially enjoyable by the people with whom I have had the privilege of collaborating: the strategic thinkers on our Board, our excellent staff members superbly guided by Gary Thomas, our members and our national colleagues,” he said.
“We have been successful in continuously enhancing our member experience and have achieved industry-wide respect as a consequence.”
Paying tribute to her predecessor as GolfWA Chair, Emma Elliott (pictured above with Higham) said: “Greg’s leadership has been nothing short of inspirational, underpinned by his sharp financial acumen, commitment to sound governance and dedication to the values and advancement of GolfWA.
“Golf in Western Australia has been a clear beneficiary of his service to the game and he leaves a very strong legacy behind him.”
Her views were echoed by GolfWA Chief Executive Gary Thomas, who added: “Greg has been an outstanding and inspirational leader to all who have served with him.
“He is also highly respected at national level and has played a major role in the integration of the management of golf in WA into the structure of Golf Australia.”
