Spencer Harrison made a strong start to his golfing year by posting top-10 finishes in four Golf Australia ranking events in South Australia and Tasmania.
The 15-year-old Royal Perth member was part of the GolfWA team sent to contest the SA Junior Amateur and Junior Masters events, and did enough to suggest he’ll be a force to be reckoned with this year after producing quality golf throughout the week.
His performance at the SA Junior Amateur at Kooyonga GC was particularly notable as he fired a best-of-the-day, blemish-free 68 (-4) in the closing round to finish in outright second at +3, two strokes adrift of Victoria’s Hamish Farquarson.
GolfWA team-mate Nate Johnson (Joondalup CC) and Royal Fremantle’s Benjamin Kivelhan also secured top-20 finishes, with Liam Sullivan (The Vines), Matthew McLaughlin (Lakelands CC), Ethan Hews (The Vines) and Thomas Pyke (Royal Fremantle) also in the field.
In the girls’ event, GolfWA team members Isabella Leniartek and Amanda Gan both withdrew with illness, but Valerie Khuu (Mount Lawley) finished T14th, with Alice Tonts (Mount Lawley, T28th) and Brianna Chueakrungthep (Gosnells GC) also competing. View the final leaderboards here.
Harrison continued his fine form with a T8th finish at the SA Junior Masters at Royal Adelaide GC, with his 54-hole total of +5 leaving him six adrift of Queenslander Chase Oberle’s winning score. Nate Johnson was a stroke further back in 10th place, with Liam Sullivan T19th.
Amanda Gan was the best of the WA bunch in the girls’ event, finishing in 9th place, with Alice Tonts 19th. Isabella Leniartek posted two strong rounds before again succumbing to illness. View the final leaderboards here.
Following this event, several WA players also chose to compete in the TAS Junior Amateur and Junior Masters events. Harrison again delivered the goods, recording respective T5th and T3rd finishes. At this early stage in the season, he sits top of the Australian Boys’ Order of Merit.
