Cobra Puma Junior Championships

1st Jul 2020

Tournament golf is back in Western Australia and it all tees off on July 6 with the 2020 Cobra Puma Junior Championships.

WA’s next generation of stars will take to the fairways at Wanneroo Golf Club for their first competitive hit since Covid-19 brought the sporting world to a halt.

Speaking about hosting the event, Wanneroo GC General Manager Mick Smith said, “The Cobra Puma Junior Championship will be one of the many highlights at Wanneroo Golf Club this year as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary.”

“We are looking forward to hosting some of the State’s most exciting young golfers and invite the local community to visit the club and enjoy our facilities.”

The Cobra Puma Junior Championship honour board is littered with the names of young stars that have advanced to make an impact on the world stage. Hannah Green, Minjee Lee, Min Woo Lee and Curtis Luck are just a few of the past champions of this long-running event that was first established in 1980.

Cobra Puma Territory Manager Ryan Chamberlain said, “Cobra Puma is committed to helping grow golf at a junior level and we are excited to sponsor one of the leading junior tournaments in WA. It’s fantastic that tournament golf is back and we can’t wait to see some great golf in the coming days.”

Aldrich Potgieter and Yeah-Jin Lee will both be back to defend the titles they won in 2019 at Royal Perth Golf Club.

Potgieter’s 2020 season got off to a fantastic start when he won the South Australian Junior Master’s at Royal Adelaide Golf Club earlier this year. After a long layoff from competitive golf, it will be interesting to see if the long-hitting Joondalup CC member can recapture his early-season form.

Yeah-Jin Lee also performed well in the early part of the season with a second-place finish at the SA Junior Masters. Last year’s home course advantage helped Lee on the way to claiming the title and the challenging and unfamiliar layout of Wanneroo GC will make back-to-back titles that much harder.

Como Golf Academy captain, Jordan Jung will be another name looking to add his name to the honour board off the back of an impressive season to date.

Jung fell agonisingly short of claiming the 2020 WA Amateur Championship, losing to Hayden Hopewell on the 36th hole of the match play final. Jung recently won the Como Secondary College Upper School Golf Championships by an impressive 13 shots and will be looking to carry this form up to Wanneroo GC.

Speaking about the recommencement of the golf season, GolfWA Chief Executive Gary Thomas said, “with the easing of restrictions in WA, we are excited that many of our GolfWA tournaments will now proceed over the coming months and we are delighted to restart our tournament program with the Cobra Puma Junior Championship at Wanneroo Golf Club.”

GolfWA is excited to re-start our 2020 tournament season and will be implementing all necessary Covid-19 protocols to ensure staff, players and patrons can compete and spectate in a safe environment.
