Big Swings golf strategy

Golf in Australia — and here in WA — is booming. Now, the latest five-year strategy to keep the sport on its upward trajectory has been unveiled.

Big Swings 2026–2030: The Next Evolution of Golf in Australia sets out how golf will continue to grow, evolve and connect more people to the game for life.

Aimed at ensuring the sport adapts to suit modern lifestyles, the Big Swings strategy focuses on three core pillars: —

  • EVOLVE: Modernising how golf is experienced across 1,800+ courses and facilities
  • BELONG: Ensuring every person in golf feels they belong — especially women and families
  • CONNECT:  Connecting one million more people to golf as they learn, play and follow the game

Big Swings features insights from more than 12,000 Australians, from both inside and outside the traditional golf industry, as well as extensive consultation with clubs and facilities of all kinds.

The strategy one-pager is shown below…

The Western Australian launch of Big Swings took place at Hamersley Golf Course, where more than 80 attendees gathered to gain an understanding of the role they can play in achieving the strategy’s goals.

As well as traditional clubs and facilities, all facets of the golf sector in WA were represented, including off-course venues, golf professionals, local and state government, content creators and players themselves.

The event was MC’d by popular content creator Chloe Gallacher, and featured strategy insights from GolfWA Chair Emma Elliott and Golf Australia’s General Manager, Places to Play, Damien De Bohun.

There was also a panel session featuring Golf Australia Chief Financial Officer Danielle Knowles; Damien Todorovic, General Manager at The Western Australian Golf Club; and GolfWA High Performance athlete Valerie Khuu.

After the formal presentations, attendees took to Hamersley’s award-winning driving range to tackle GolfWA state golfers in a series of virtual challenges.

Arron Minchin, Chief Executive of GolfWA, believes the Big Swings strategy has a vital role to play in the future health of the sport.

“The launch of Big Swings is an important moment for our sport, and one that reflects both where golf is today and where it goes next,” he said.

“Golf in WA and across Australia is in a strong position. More people are playing golf in more ways and in more places than ever before. But the game is changing and the expectations of today’s golfers are different from what they were even five years ago.

“People want flexibility, shorter formats and social connection. Most importantly, they want experiences that fit into their lives, not the other way around.

“We’re fortunate in WA to have a very vibrant golf ecosystem, where traditional clubs and facilities are actually complemented by off-course venues to provide pathways to suit all types of golfers,” he added.

“Local and state governments have also recognised the benefits well-run golf facilities can bring to entire communities, and have made long-term investments that will continue to grow the game for years to come.”
