Jazy Roberts couldn’t repeat her record-breaking feats of yesterday but remains in full control of the Bowra & O’Dea Women’s Classic.
Roberts (pictured) was 12 strokes clear of the field after 36 holes at Mount Lawley GC on Monday — her 11-under-par total including a new course record of 68 (six under par) in the afternoon.
The 21-year-old Victorian didn’t quite hit the same heights in Tuesday’s third round, carding a one-over-par 75, but still holds a 10-shot cushion with 18 holes to play.
A key difference today was Roberts’ inability to take full advantage of Mount Lawley’s reachable par fives.
On Monday, she averaged five birdies per round on the six par-five holes. Today, she was just one under for the equivalent six holes.
“Today was pretty average,” Roberts told GolfWA. “I wasn’t hitting the ball well, my putter stopped working and I kept putting it in the wrong spots. When you do that, it’s always going to be tricky.”
While it will take an unlikely series of events for Roberts to be overtaken in Wednesday’s final round, she says her sizeable lead won’t change her approach.
“I don’t think the lead really matters too much,” she added. “I’ll still just go out there and play my own game regardless of what anyone else is doing.”
Roberts’ nearest challenger is Gosnells Golf Club member Nalynn Kim, who fired a one-under-par 73 today to move to level par for the championship.
One of the youngest players in the draw, 13-year-old Kim displayed great poise and a sure touch on the greens to put herself in position to achieve her highest finish in a World Amateur Golf Ranking event.
Amie Phobubpa hit the round of the day with a superb 70
The round of the day belonged to WA state golfer Amie Phobubpa (Joondalup CC), who fired a sublime four-under-par 70 to move up into a share of third alongside Cottesloe GC’s Katie Seol at +3 for the championship.
In the concurrent Mid-Amateur Championship, Gosnells’ Grace Cheetham moved into a commanding six-stroke lead after a round of 81, while Jocelyn Hutchinson (Wanneroo GC) leads the Seniors’ event by one from Monash GC’s Alison Gatland.
