Brassies, mashies, niblicks and plus-fours were out in force at Pingelly Golf Club during a hickory golf day in honour of club legend Claude Felstead.
The Wheatbelt club was founded in 1911, with Felstead — the 1909 Australian Open Champion — amongst its founding members having moved to WA from Victoria to start a sheep farm.
He lived and worked in Pingelly until 1946 before retiring to Perth, where he died in 1964.
Felstead became the first left-hander to win the Australian Open and the clubs he used to win it are on permanent display above the bar at Pingelly Golf Club.
To honour Felstead’s legacy, members of Hickory Golf WA visited Pingelly in late August for a celebratory 18 holes.
Dressed in period attire and sporting traditional, hickory-shafted clubs, the group received a warm welcome from Pingelly members — with several of the visitors playing a sand greens course for the first time.
After the on-course action was concluded, Colin Page delivered an informative presentation on Claude Felstead and the history of Pingelly Golf Club.
This was followed by Hickory Golf WA’s Dan Cullen’s presentation of a caricature of Felstead to the club, which was accepted by Pingelly Life Members Terry Page, Peter Watts, Lesley Page, Colin Page and Clem Nottle.
The caricature (pictured below right) will now be mounted above the bar to sit alongside Felstead’s Aussie Open-winning hickory clubs.
