Former GolfWA Chairman Max Hannah has been made a Member of the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday Honours.
Rockingham Golf Club member Hannah was recognised for his significant service to golf administration, surf life saving and community sport.
Considered a titan of WA golf, Hannah was the inaugural Chair of GolfWA, holding the post between 2011 and 2017 following the amalgamation of the separate men’s and women’s state associations.
Before that, Hannah served as President of the Western Australian Golf Association. He was made a Life Member of GolfWA in 2018 and currently Chairs GolfWA’s Honours & Archives Sub-Committee.
Despite decades of service to the game, Hannah admitted that the news came as a “complete surprise”, but one that left him feeling “truly honoured”.
“My involvement in golf and sport administration has always been about working with people to achieve positive outcomes,” he told GolfWA.
“I therefore acknowledge the award on behalf of the hundreds of marvellous volunteers and extremely dedicated staff alongside whom I have worked and served over such a long time.”
GolfWA Chief Executive Arron Minchin paid tribute to Hannah’s immense contribution to the game of golf in the state, saying: “This is fantastic recognition of Max’s dedication to sport more broadly and golf in particular.
“Max is highly regarded by all who know him in golf and continues to play an active role within the industry. On behalf of all at GolfWA, we offer Max our sincere congratulations.”
