It was a family affair at this year’s Men’s Pilbara Open, with father-and-son duo Bodie and Zavier Broun taking out the top two positions.
Hosted by Mountain View Golf Club in Tom Price, the 58th staging of the championship drew a field of 36 participants from clubs from as far afield as Exmouth, Port Hedland, Karratha and Newman.
Participants also travelled from interstate, with Chuchill-Waverley GC (Vic) and Palmerston GC (NT) represented.
Characterised by rocky fairways and native bushland consisting of eucalyptus, spinifex and exposed rock, the unique setting of Mountain View GC provided an array of challenges for participants.
Local rules permit players to tee the ball up on the fairways and take a one club-length preferred lie when off the fairway. It’s certainly not a course to be too precious about your clubs on!
The story of the championship was the fine form of the Broun boys, as the Karratha pair annexed the winner and runner-up spots with some sublime golf.
Dad Bodie — the General Manager at Karratha Country Club — fired rounds of 75 and 72 to lead home the field by seven strokes.
It was an emotional victory for Bodie, who had previously finished as runner-up four times in this event, having secured all the other significant men’s titles in the region.
Bodie’s week got even better when his 13-year-old son Zavier produced the round of the championship on day two to claim second place.
After an opening round of 85, Zavier responded with an exceptional round of 69 (three under par). Not only was this the only sub-par round of the tournament, Zavier also smashed his own lifetime best score by a mighty nine strokes.

Mountain View GC’s rocky fairways make it a unique challenge
Elsewhere in the field, it was a good weekend for Fortescue GC members William Bargmann and Connor Martin, who took out the respective B Grade and C Grade titles.
Mountain View GC will also host the 2026 Ladies’ Pilbara Open on July 25-26.
