Teasdale just misses out on Rene Erichsen Salver in SA

Abbie Teasdale

Abbie Teasdale came up just short of victory in the Rene Erichsen Salver at Royal Adelaide Golf Club with a fighting runner-up finish.

Held in conjunction with the men’s SA Classic, the 72-hole stroke play Salver is one of the most prestigious on the national golfing calendar, with the strong fields in both events including many of the nation’s leading amateur golfers.

In the mix from day one, Royal Fremantle’s Teasdale was just a shot off the lead with 18 holes to play and proceeded to engage in an intense battle for the title with NSW’s Ella Scaysbrook and SA’s Amelia Whinney.

On an exciting final day, the lead was exchanged between the three players during the front nine before Whinney established a two-stroke lead after 12, which she promptly handed back with a double bogey to fall into a three-way tie at the top.

“Teasdale further underlined her reputation as one of the nation’s leading amateurs.”

A costly Teasdale bogey at the par-five 15th saw her having to play catch-up and when Whinney agonisingly dropped a shot at the last, the title was Scaysbrook’s by the narrowest of margins from her two rivals at -2 for the championship.

It was, nevertheless, a fine week’s work by Teasdale, who further bolstered her reputation as one of the nation’s leading amateurs. In a strong event for WA golfers, Erina Tan (Mount Lawley GC) finished 7th with Amie Phobubpa (Joondalup CC) T11th. Sophie Williams (Mount Lawley) also played all four rounds, finishing in 22nd position. View the final leaderboard here.

In the concurrent men’s South Australia Classic, Mount Lawley’s Jordan Doull was the top-performing WA golfer in T15th, ahead of Joe Owen (Lake Karrinyup CC) and Jakeb Dunkley (Rockingham GC) who shared 22nd.

Ken Gao (Mount Lawley), Izaac Heales (Mandurah CC) and Joseph Buttress (WAGC) also made the cut finishing T31st, T33rd and 47th respectively. NSW’s Kayun Mudadana was the overall winner. View the final leaderboard here.
