More than 160 women from as far afield as Esperance and Geraldton gathered in Perth to contribute to another memorable Drummond Golf Women’s Country Week.
Candian Foursomes competitions at Hartfield GC and Gosnells GC kicked proceedings off on the Wednesday before the 36-hole Stableford Silver/Bronze championships at Royal Fremantle and Lakelands Country Club on Thursday and Friday.
With various competitions in play, including nett and gross championships for players from sand greens and grass greens courses, there was something hinging on almost every shot with plenty of drama throughout.
The big winner of the week in the Silver Division was Denmark Country Club’s Marion Nelson (above right), who claimed the Silver Country Championship Cup for the second year running. She plundered 51 points over the two days to claim a two-point margin of victory over Capel GC’s Lisa Wake.
“It’s fantastic to come and play all of these beautiful courses, it’s a great challenge for us country women and a great way to check in on everyone,” Nelson told GolfWA. “I’m thrilled to win this event for the second year in a row.”
It marked the second GolfWA event this year that Nelson has successfully defended after she also took top honours in the Provincial Trophy at Dongara GC in July.
In the Bronze Division, Bunbury GC’s Julie Rando (above left) claimed the title on a countback from clubmate Rhonda Zanich, while there was also a magical moment for Capel GC’s Gail Marino, who achieved a hole-in-one at Royal Fremantle’s par-3 third on Friday.
