Kiran Day and Abbie Teasdale have secured dream victories in the Amateur Championships of Western Australia on Sunday afternoon at The Western Australian Golf Club.
Day, 22, played the perfect round to record 11-under-par over 27 holes to finish 10 & 9 victor over Matthew Cheung of Hong Kong.
Teasdale’s road to the championship was much more thrilling. Yeah-Jin Lee and Teasdale were all square down the 18th, but missed their respective putts to take the contest to extra holes.
The Royal Fremantle member then sunk a 10-foot putt to seal the championship on the 37th hole, sparking emotional celebrations.
Day was a class above throughout his round, shooting 63 on the first 18 holes to take a seven-hole lead going into the turn.
The Cottesloe member couldn’t put a foot wrong going bogey-free for the entire round, becoming the 40th member to clinch the coveted crown.
Day began the match steadily shooting just one birdie in the first four holes, before an impressive eagle on the sixth set his round alight.
By the end of the ninth, Day was 3up and tracking towards his first ever WA Amateur title.
Three more birdies on the back nine saw the lead shoot out to seven, Cheung couldn’t recover from there.
The victory proved all the more sweeter for Day after going down to compatriot Min Woo Lee in the 2015 final.
The women’s tie proved to be a tight affair with both girls not giving an inch for all of the 37 holes.
Both girls found the going tough throughout the fixture, with Yeah-Jin Lee holding the the biggest advantage with a two-shot lead on the 19th.
The girls stayed all square from the 31st hole, with a birdie on the first extra hole to Teasdale enough to take the title.
The 15-year old capped off her stellar week, which included a course-record 66 on Thursday, as well as taking the trophy on Sunday.
The result sees two Western Aussies capture the title for another year.
