South Australia’s George Vassiliadis became the first champion of WA Open week with a dominant display in the All Abilities Championship.
The 36-hole event for golfers with physical, mental and sensory impairments featured nine competitors, including six from Western Australia.
Played on the same course at the same time as the Nexus Advisernet Bowra & O’Dea WA Open, the firm conditions and tricky pins put the field through its paces and only Vassiliadis (pictured above) and QLD’s Joshua Jones broke 90 on day one.
The duo shared the 18-hole lead after rounds of 89, which left them two clear of big-hitting defending champion Lochie Smith from NSW.
Day two belonged to Vassiliadis, however, as he raised his game to reach the turn in just 40 strokes and put clear water between himself and the chasing pack.
Even a double-bogey 7 at the 12th didn’t blunt Vassiliadis’s impetus and he was able to coast home, his second-round 81 leaving him eight clear of Mount Lawley’s Mark Mosbach at +26 for the championship.

Mount Lawley member Mark Mosbach claimed the runner-up spot
The 32-year-old member at Links Lady Bay in Adelaide was delighted to have found his A-Game on day two as he claimed the most significant title of his career to date.
“I was a bit dark on myself yesterday after 89, but after seeing how some of the pros struggled later in the day I realised I was probably being a bit harsh on myself,” Vassiliadis told GolfWA.
“Today was different. I learned from yesterday and played much smarter golf. My long putting was awesome and it was great to finish on such a positive round.”
Like most of the players at this week’s WA Open, Vassiliadis had nothing but praise for the Mount Lawley setup.
“I’m a sucker for course conditioning and it doesn’t get much better than this,” he added. “I’m very grateful to have the chance to play here this week with such a great bunch of guys.”
In the nett championship, Lake Karrinyup Country Club member Nick Panos took out the top spot, with Joshua Jones the runner-up.
