Home advantage counted for Shirley Dempster as she eased to victory in the GolfWA Regional Seniors Tournament at Denmark Country Club.
Dempster (pictured above) was always in contention throughout the 36-hole Stableford championship and led the field after the first day courtesy of a 38-point haul in favourable morning conditions.
Playing in the AM/PM side of the draw, Dempster held firm on day two’s afternoon session to post a further 33 points off her 28 handicap for a winning total of 71.
This left her three points clear of club-mate Marion Nelson, who added 31 points to her opening 37 in the same half of the draw to claim the runner-up spot.
The Denmark CC pair leapfrogged clubhouse leader Enid Andrew (Serpentine GC), who had set a target of 67 points in the PM/AM draw. Andrew ultimately finished T3rd with Harvey GC’s Judith Doyle.
This year’s championship attracted a field of 142 women from 29 different clubs, with the furthest travellers coming from Dongara (760km) and Pink Lake (529km).
As is the custom, the Thursday night fancy dress dinner was well supported, with dozens of attendees making the most of the ‘Ooh La La, Paris’ theme. York and Bolgart golf clubs’ troupe of French chefs were declared the best dressed on the night.

Neil Goddard, GolfWA’s Operations Manager, hailed the success of the event, saying: “This event is always a great celebration of regional women’s golf, and this year was no exception.
“The team at Denmark Country Club were fantastic hosts and the course was presented beautifully throughout. Our thanks to Captain Irene Stone and Vice-Captain Lee Barridge, who co-ordinated a great team of volunteers to ensure the event went off without a hitch.”
