Played out in testing, changeable conditions at Royal Fremantle, the final was a predictably close contest between Division 1’s dominant teams.

Royal Perth perhaps held a small psychological advantage after topping the group stage with seven wins out of seven — including a 4-3 win over Gosnells two weeks ago.

Match play golf is anything but predictable, though, and Gosnells came out of the blocks swiftly, with teen trio Brianna Chueakrungthep, Kayla Clarke and Nalynn Kim all establishing strong leads after nine holes.

However, with Royal Perth’s Rose Moorby, Halia Edwards and Meihui Zhao subsequently taking control of their matches, the final looked set for a nail-biting conclusion, with the clash between Grace Cheetham and Colette Nalder shaping up to be crucial.

Gosnells’ Cheetham held a precious one-hole advantage over the wily Nalder through nine holes before producing some fearless golf to extend her lead and put Gosnells firmly in pole position.

Match wins for Chueakrungthep, Clarke and Kim took Gosnells to the brink of victory before Moorby put a point on the board for Royal Perth with a fine 4&3 win over WA state golfer Aileen Sirait.

This paved the way for Cheetham to wrap things up for Gosnells as she closed out a 4&3 win over Nalder to secure her team the flag for a second straight season.

Halia Edwards and Alexandria Page agreed to a halved match before completing their 15th hole, while Royal Perth number one Zhao — deputising for the absent Isabella Leniartek — recorded an impressive 3&2 win over Gosnells’ Sasha Hofman in the top match to reduce the deficit to 4.5 – 2.5.

Gosnells eyeing three-peat

Having never won the Women’s Pennants Division 1 crown until last year, Gosnells will now have their eye on a remarkable three-peat in 2027.

Team number one Sasha Hofman certainly believes the young team has what it takes to maintain its stranglehold on the event next season.

“The whole team has combined so well every week, but it’s been great to see all our juniors doing so well this year,” Hofman told GolfWA.

“They’ll improve even further in the coming year, and we have more young players coming through, so I think we’re looking good for next year already!”

Women’s Weekday Pennants winners

Gosnells’ women enjoyed a productive season, as they also wrapped up the Weekday Pennants titles for Divisions 3 and 5.

In Division 3, Gosnells (pictured below) edged Lake Karrinyup 4-3 in a winner-takes-all clash to take the title by a single point, while their Division 5 team completed a perfect season with a 6-1 win over Royal Fremantle on the final day.

Despite halving their final match, Royal Fremantle had wrapped up the Division 4 crown with a match to spare and won by two points from Cottesloe.

Wanneroo, meanwhile, were the first women’s pennants winners of the year, securing the Division 1 Weekday title in late May.

As well as topping Division 1 of the individual competition, Royal Fremantle’s senior men were also a dominant force in the 4BBB divisions, claiming three further crowns.

Their run to the Division 1 individual pennant is particularly notable given that Royal Fremantle were playing in the second tier as recently as 2024.

After earning promotion back to the top flight, their resurgence continued at pace last year as they finished runners-up to Mount Lawley.

This time round, Royal Fremantle were able to go one better, completing an unbeaten season that included wins over Joondalup, Mount Lawley and Royal Perth, and halved matches with Cottesloe and Lakelands.

Their eight-point haul left them two clear of joint runners-up Royal Perth and Cottesloe, while Joondalup took the wooden spoon and will be relegated to Division 2.

Gosnells will replace Joondalup in the top tier in 2027 after coasting to the Division 2 title, winning all five of their matches in the process.

There were also eight further divisional titles in the 4BBB pennants competition, with Royal Fremantle banking three of them after wins over Cottesloe and two Chequers teams in the Green, Red and Blue Division finals.

Gosnells also tasted further success, taking out the Yellow and Orange Divisions, while Mandurah (White), Wanneroo (Silver) and Kwinana (Black) also celebrated memorable wins.

Overall, a total of 12 club teams competed in the two individual divisions and 64 teams from 26 clubs competed in the 4BBB divisions.

As well as taking out the Division 1 crown, Gosnells doubled up to land boys’ Division 2. Royal Fremantle’s girls, meanwhile, secured a memorable Division 1 three-peat and also claimed top spot in Division 4.

The girls’ finals at The Western Australian Golf Club saw Royal Fremantle take on Royal Perth in a straight shoot-out for the title, which proved to be a tight affair between two evenly matched sides.

Fremantle gained the first point of the final as Megan Hill swept to a 7&6 win over Danielle Ray Del Val, before team captain Taehee Woo made it 2-0 with an excellent 4&2 triumph over Isabella Leniartek in the top match.

Showing great spirit, Royal Perth fought back to level the tie at 2-2 after narrow wins for Rose Moorby and Meihui Zhao over Heejoo Cho and Dempsey Brown respectively.

It meant all eyes were on the Zoe Grace Ong vs Chanelle Maxwell clash, which was a thrilling microcosm of the entire match.

Royal Fremantle’s Ong held a one-hole lead over Maxwell on the 18th tee and showed nerves of steel to win the hole and the match to shepherd her team to a nail-biting 3-2 victory.

Royal Fremantle skipper Woo paid generous tribute to her team-mates as they revelled in their third consecutive Division 1 title.

“I’m super-proud of the team and all the effort they put in this season,” she told GolfWA. “We all know we can count on each other and it’s the best team I could ever ask for.

“It means a lot to get our third straight win since this is Megan and Heejoo’s final year of junior golf. We are all stoked about winning again and looking to come back next year with another massive bang.”

Elsewhere in the girls’ finals, Joondalup defeated Mount Lawley 3.5 – 1.5 to win Division 2; WAGC whitewashed Mount Lawley 5 – 0 in Division 3; and Royal Fremantle produced a dominant display to clinch Division 4 with a 4 – 0 win over Lakelands.

Good going for Gosnells

Having not topped the boys’ top flight since 2022, Gosnells’ strong lineup proved too good for defending champions The Vines in the final showdown.

Blake Wager got the first point for Gosnells, winning his head-to-head against Lewis Baker 4&3 to complete his season with a 100% winning record from four matches.

It was much closer in all the other ties, but the Gosnells boys found a way to get the job done with narrow wins for Ty Cleland, Connor Pearson and Connor Roberts making the pennant safe.

Declan Pereira got The Vines’ sole point on the day with a fine 2UP win over Mason Burr in a top match awash with quality golf.

A good day got better for Gosnells as their second team swept to the Division 2 crown courtesy of a 4 – 1 win over Kwinana, with Isaac Low, Kai Scott, Na-Pha Lloyd and Zachary Sasidharan winning the crucial points.

Elsewhere, Lakelands overpowered Gosnells 4-1 to top Division 3, while Bunbury defeated Mount Lawley 3 – 1 in Division 4.

The fifth and final series of round-robin matches took place across four divisions, with four different clubs claiming the flags.

Despite defeat at the hands of Royal Fremantle on the last day, Gosnells‘ superior win/loss ratio saw them top the Central Black Division after both teams had tied on seven points.

Sea View (pictured above) comfortably defended their Central Gold flag after going unbeaten throughout the season. Indeed, after winning their first four matches the title was already guaranteed, making their 2-2 tie with Mosman Park in round five something of a dead rubber.

In the North Division, Wanneroo and Joondalup went head-to-head in a winner-takes-all encounter on the final day, but Wanneroo emrged triumphant, making the most of home advantage to run out 3-1 winners to successfully defend their title.

Things were similarly tight in the South Division, with Kwinana, Pinjarra and Mandurah Blue all entertaining hopes of topping the standings going into the last round.

Intriguingly, Mandurah Blue squared off against club rivals Mandurah Gold in one match, with Kwinana and Pinjarra clashing in another, and nothing could separate the teams as both matches finished 2-2.

This left Kwinana as champions on seven points, with Pinjarra and Mandurah Blue just a point behind.

The capricious weather was a dominant factor from the get-go, with lightning activity causing a suspension of play just minutes after the matches commenced.

Heavy rains, water-logged greens and high winds also sapped energy levels and morale before a violent hailstorm and more lightning ultimately caused an early cessation of play.

It meant that finals of Divisions 1 and 3 (Wanneroo vs Lakelands) were decided on individual match scores after 27 holes rather than 36, and after just 18 holes for Division 2 (Bunbury vs Gosnells).

That notwithstanding, Royal Perth were excellent value for their victory. Having gone unbeaten all season, they had too much strength in depth for Royal Fremantle in the final as they ran away with a 5.5 – 1.5 win.

Their experienced trio of Andrew Brown, Peter Bennett and Craig Hoare led by example to put the first three points on the board for their team.

The dangerous Jamie Warman – back to something approaching his best after career-threatening injuries – made the match safe with a 3&1 win over Thomas Pyke, while a 1UP win for Aidan Hassan and a half for Corley McLernon added gloss to the score.

There was some consolation for Royal Fremantle, though, with Mitch Boorn overturning an early deficit in the top match against Jordan Jung to win 3UP.

Royal Perth’s victory was their first in Division 1 since 2015 and their 22nd overall in the history of the competition – equalling the record held by Royal Fremantle.

Despite the frantic conditions the final was played in, Royal Perth’s playing captain Peter Bennett had nothing but praise for his charges.

“We gelled as a team really nicely and went through the season undefeated, so you can’t ask for more than that,” he told GolfWA.

“They’re just a bunch of nice guys, who are so happy to hang out with each other and I think that camaraderie was the key for us this year.

“Myself and Brownie (Andrew Brown) are the stalwarts, but we’ve got some really good, young up-and-comers who contributed to the success, so maybe I can retire from playing now and watch from the sidelines on days like this!”

Weather wreaks havoc on finals day

Nine divisional finals were contested at Cottesloe, Lake Karrinyup and Melville Glades, with only two going the full distance.

Played over 18 holes, Divisions 5 and 8 went to WAGC and Hartfield respectively, but the inclement weather caused the postponement of the Division 6 and 7 finals, which will be completed at a future date.

In Division 3, Lakelands CC edged Wanneroo 4-3 based on the match state after 27 holes, while the Division 2 flag went to Gosnells in singular circumstances.

When play was suspended for a second time late in the day at Cottesloe, the match between Gosnells and Bunbury was delicately poised, with all but one individual match having completed 27 holes.

With lightning activity in the area and darkness falling, play was unable to resume. Given that not every match had completed 27 holes, the result was determined on the match scores after 18 holes, granting Gosnells the flag by a 4-3 margin.

Gosnells will return to Division 1 in 2026 at the expense of The Vines, who were relegated from the top tier, while Lakelands move up to Division 2 to replace Nedlands.

Both clubs are hoping to put lengthy waits for the top flight title behind them, with Royal Perth last winning Division 1 in 2015 and Royal Fremantle’s drought extending back to 1995.

Royal Perth marched into the final on the back of an unbeaten season that has seen them rack up five wins and two halves from their seven matches.

Their Fremantle rivals have lost just once, to Cottesloe in Round 2, earning three wins and three halves – including their washed-out Round 7 match against Joondalup last weekend.

The inclement weather also saw Lake Karrinyup’s potentially decisive match against The Vines called off, leaving the LKCC, the 2023 champions, third in the table.

While Royal Perth may go into Sunday’s showdown as slight favourites, Royal Fremantle will be no pushover – as evidenced by the tied match between the two teams in Round 6. Both teams will also be missing a talismanic presence, adding to the uncertainty.

Royal Fremantle’s Zach Capelli had won all five of his individual matches prior to heading off to the UK to support his best mate Min Woo Lee at The Open Championship. He will not be back in time for the Pennants final.

Similarly, Royal Peth will be without young Spencer Harrison, absent due to a summer of golf in the United States. Jordan Jung, however, has ably stepped into his shoes to win two and half one of his three matches in the number one spot.

With the top three divisions’ finals all consisting of 36-hole individual matches, players’ mental and physical resolve will be thoroughly put to the test. It ought to be a fascinating tussle.

Seven more flags up for grabs

The Division 2 and 3 titles will also be decided at Cottesloe GC, with Bunbury and Gosnells going head-to-head for promotion to Division 1 in what should be a close  encounter.

Each amassed 12 points from their seven matches, with Bunbury edging their rivals 4-3 in their Round 4 clash.

Wanneroo take on Lakelands in the Division 3 final, with Wanneroo favourites on paper having won the Round 1 match between the teams 4.5-2.5.

Elsewhere, Melville Glades GC and Lake Karrinyup Country Club will host the Men’s Pennants finals for Divisions 4-8 on Sunday, with North vs South bragging rights on the line.

The two top teams after seven group matches went head-to-head at Mount Lawley GC, with Royal Fremantle the favourites having won all seven of their matches – including a 5-2 win over Gosnells back in April.

However, on a changeable day that featured drizzle, heavy downpours and intermittent sunshine, it was a much closer contest, with momentum shifting one way and then the other across the seven individual matches.

It was Royal Fremantle who put the first point on the board in emphatic fashion, with Dempsey Brown putting Brianna Chueakrungthep to the sword en route to a 9&8 win.

Kayla Clarke duly levelled the match with a 5&3 victory over Taehoo Woo, before Grace Cheetham put Gosnells ahead with a 3&2 win over Zoe Grace Ong.

With the other matches all nip-and-tuck affairs, the fate of the Pennant was still very much in the air, however.

Royal Fremantle’s Heather Grace Ong reduced a four-hole deficit to just one to take a high-quality encounter with Halia Edwards down the 18th, but it was the Gosnells’ teen who held firm to win the final hole and post a crucial 2UP victory.

A narrow win for Amanda Gan over Sasha Hofman in the top match kept Royal Fremantle’s title hopes alive, leaving them needing to claim both the remaining matches on course.

As the tension rose, nothing could separate Sarah Terrell and Aileen Sirait through 18 holes, with the pair also halving their first playoff hole.

It was Gosnells’ Sirait – a WA state junior representative – who eventually prevailed, winning her match on the 20th hole and guaranteeing her team the coveted flag.

This allowed Saehi Suh and Heejoo Cho to play out an entertaining halved match before Gosnells’ players and officials celebrated on the 18th green.

Strength in depth

As well as claiming the Division 1 title for the very first time, Gosnells have the honour of winning the centenary championship, with women’s pennants first contested back in 1925.

An emotional team captain Ros McIver paid generous tribute to the players, many of whom she’s known and coached over a period of decades.

“I’m over the moon! It’s been so special to be with them this year. They’ve been a fantastic team and I’m so happy for them,” she told GolfWA.

“I started coaching Gracie (Cheetham) when she was eight years old, and she’s now the oldest member of the team at 40, so I’m really pleased she could be part of this.

“We’ve also got Sasha, who’s in her mid-20s, as well as a number of very talented young players who contributed strongly throughout the season.”

McIver certainly doesn’t think it’ll be another hundred years before Gosnells GC wins the Women’s Division 1 Pennant again.

“We’ve got a lot of good juniors coming through at the club at the moment,” she added.

“They didn’t all play in Division 1 this year, but they have been supporting the team and caddying, and I think they’ve learned a lot from the experience.

“I’m hopeful this can be the start of something really good for our women’s teams in the coming years.”

Although it wasn’t to be for Royal Fremantle’s Division 1 team, the club enjoyed a magnificent women’s pennants season, winning the Weekend South division and Weekday Divisions 4 and 5.  All the winning divisional teams are listed below.

Royal Fremantle’s girls secured back-to-back Division 1 wins for the first time, while The Vines’ boys ended a title drought stretching back to the last millennium.

They did it in contrasting fashions, too, with The Vines’ boys running out comfortable winners over Gosnells and Royal Fremantle’s girls needing extra holes to edge out Royal Perth.

Indeed, the Girls’ Division 1 final was an edge-of-the-seat rollercoaster ride of a clash, with momentum swinging one way then the other before a dramatic conclusion at a sun-kissed Western Australian Golf Club.

An impressive 6&5 win for Dempsey Brown over Kimberley Innes put the first point on the board for Royal Fremantle, but this was soon cancelled out by Royal Perth’s Danielle Rey Del Val, who ran out a 4&3 winner over Zoe Grace Ong.

With the three other matches all hanging in the balance, a titanic battle ensued, one which perfectly showcased the unique excitement of the match play format.

Royal Fremantle captain Heather Grace Ong eked out a vital 2&1 win over Rose Moorby to give her team a slender advantage, but it required some nerves of steel from her teammates Taehoo Woo and Heejoo Cho to keep their hopes alive.

Woo fought back valiantly from a two-hole deficit to take her match against Lilli Andrew to extra holes. She had a great chance to win the tie on the 19th, but a putt that refused to drop kept Andrew in it and she duly levelled the tie at 2-2 by winning the 20th.

Cho, meanwhile, facing Royal Perth’s talisman Isabella Leniartek in the top match, birdied the final two holes of regulation play to also force a playoff, which she won on the 20th hole to give Royal Fremantle back-to-back Girls’ Division 1 titles for the first time.

Team captain Heather Grace Ong told GolfWA: “I’m so proud of this team. We’re like one big family, very supportive of one another, and to defend the title is such a good feeling.”

Royal Fremantle’s celebrations didn’t end there, though, with their second team taking out the Division 3 flag after a perfect 5-0 victory over Joondalup.

Gosnells, meanwhile, secured the Division 2 and 4 crowns after wins over Joondalup and the combined Lakelands/Lake Karrinyup The Vines teams respectively.

Vines’ boys end 25-year title drought

None of The Vines‘ final lineup were even a sparkle in their parents’ eyes when the club last won the Boys’ Division 1 title way back in 1999.

Nevertheless, their fab five of Declan Pereira, Liam Sullivan, Lucas Cowton, Ethan Hews and Riley Schafer shepherded the team to a memorable victory over Gosnells to cap an unbeaten season.

All of the team members contributed strongly as they progressed to the final courtesy of three narrow wins over Wanneroo, Lake Karrinyup and Royal Fremantle in the group stages – and they carried that form into the final at Joondalup Resort.

Rolling over a Gosnells team led by Australian international and WA state junior captain Josiah Edwards is no mean feat, but The Vines’ quintet held firm when it mattered to take out the flag in another close contest.

In the number one match against Edwards, Pereira produced some sublime golf down the stretch to claim a 2UP victory having been chasing for much of the match, while Sullivan and Mason Burr shared the spoils in match two.

Although Gosnells’ Connor Pearson earned a point in a 3&2 win over Schafer, The Vines weren’t to be denied a famous win, with Hews and Cowton controlling their matches to see the team home 3.5-1.5.

The Vines Team Manager Rhys Shawyer paid emotional tribute to his young charges, saying: “I’m so thrilled for these boys. We’ve all put in a lot of work to build up junior golf at The Vines and to win Division 1 after all these years is a fantastic achievement.”

Elsewhere in the boys’ competition, Gosnells‘ second team won Division 2 after a 4-1 win over Mount Lawley, while WAGC and Cottesloe also enjoyed success in the Division 3 and 4 finals at Lake Karrinyup.

Four divisional titles will be decided in each of the girls’ and boys’ competitions, with matches spread across Lake Karrinyup, Joondalup Country Club and The Western Australian Golf Club.

Joondalup’s testing Quarry/Dune Course will play host to the Boys’ Div 1 and 2 finals, which see the respective winners of the Black and Gold qualifying groups face-off for the flags.

In Division 1, The Vines take on Gosnells in an intriguing showdown that guarantees the winner a welcome return to the Pennants Honours Board. Indeed, The Vines will be hoping to land the flag for the first time this millennium having topped Division 1 just once before – way back in 1999.

With their talented line-up including WA state squad members Declan Pereira and Liam Sullivan, The Vines coasted through the Gold Group, winning all three of their matches en route to the final.

Competing in the Black Group, Gosnells are also unbeaten so far having won two and halved one of their matches, with team number one Mason Burr contributing some massive individual wins along the way.

Although Gosnells’ talisman Josiah Edwards has yet to play in the 2025 Junior Pennants season, he is set to make a return for the final and his presence could be a decisive factor in determining the title. His club last won the Division 1 crown in 2022.

Elsewhere in the boys’ competition, Gosnells 2 will take on Mount Lawley for the Division 2 title at Joondalup, while Nedlands vs WAGC 2 and The Vines 3 vs Cottesloe make up the respective Division 3 and 4 finals, hosted by Lake Karrinyup.

Royal Freo girls aiming to go back-to-back

After a famous victory over Mount Lawley in last year’s final, Royal Fremantle are aiming to go back-to-back when they take on Royal Perth in the Girls’ Division 1 final at WAGC.

The two teams finished tied on 5 points from their three qualifying matches, which included an inconclusive halved match between them in Round 2. On paper, the final also could be a very close encounter with both teams able to call on some of the most talented girl golfers in the state.

Royal Perth’s team number one Isabella Leniartek has predictably led by example, winning all three of her individual matches against top-close opposition so far.

She has found able support in WA state squad members Lilli Andrew, Meihui Zhao, while Danielle Ray Del Val has won all three of her matches and Rose Moorby two out of three.

Royal Fremantle are hoping to defend their Division 1 Girls’ title

Royal Fremantle have strength-in-depth of their own, however, with +1 handicapper Heejoo Cho playing the best golf of her career and the highly regarded sisters Heather Grace and Zoe Grace Ong well capable of competing against the state’s top talents.

Taehee Woo, Dempsey Brown and Chanelle Maxwell have also all contributed points throughout the qualifying rounds, making it too close to call an overall winner.

Three other girls’ titles will also be decided at WAGC, with all the head-to-head matches listed below.

The native garden, located close to the women’s tee box at the 9th hole, was funded by the women of the club with the assistance of the club’s management and many volunteers. At the heart of the Women’s Garden lies a unique display of pavers, which depicts the journey of women at the club.

Each paver represents a significant milestone, highlighting the pivotal moments that have shaped the club’s history. These pavers read as follows: –

• Outstanding, Loyal and Beneficial Service (to the formation of the first associates’ group)
• Multi-tasking Ladies to Equality as Members (to the inclusion of business associates)
• Working Women Play on Saturdays!
• R&A Women in Golf Charter 2023 (And so the journey continues)

Gosnell GC’s women at the official opening of the garden

Deb Callcott, Gosnells GC’s Women’s Golf Coordinator, believes the garden “is like planting a seed that will blossom and bear fruit for generations to come”.

“By honouring and celebrating the contributions of our female members, some past and some present, we are celebrating a bright future and a strong, inclusive club,” she said.

Long-time member Colleen Harvey added that women had contributed strongly to the club’s rich history. “That’s something we just don’t want to lose,” she said. “We’re very proud of it, the garden is there for the history, and the birds love it!”

Gosnells GC has a long-standing commitment to promoting equality and inclusivity and became the first WA club to sign the R&A’s Women in Golf Charter in late 2022.
