WA Juniors Dominating at the Top

6th Apr 2022

West Australian Juniors continue to work their magic at the 2022 Australian Junior Amateur, dominating the top of the leaderboard after Round 2. WAGC’s Joseph Buttress continued his consistently strong form, holds the outright lead in the boys competition by one stroke over reigning champion Jeffrey Guan.

Lake Karrinyup’s Sheridan Clancy improved on yesterday’s stellar performance and joined QLD’s Sarah Hammett to take the lead moving into tomorrow’s third round.  Windy and chilly conditions proved challenging for the full field today, but with a tight margin for the top tier of the leaderboard tomorrow will be a test of stamina and skill.

Clancy stumbled on the 11th, her second hole of the day but then continued with a flawless round, adding birdies into the mix at holes two and five.  Clancy shared,

“I’m really happy with the outcome of today, in particular my driving and number of fairways hit.  There are some really challenging holes on this course, and the wind really came into play today.”

Buttress maintained an even par result today, starting strong with a consistent run of seven pars, frustratingly missing a number of birdie putts.  With birdies on hole one and five, Buttress only narrowly made bogey on holes seventeen and six.

“Conditions were trickier this afternoon, as were the pins.  Looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.”

Notable performances today in the boys competition from Alex Maxwell, Corley McClernon, Josiah Edwards and Ollie Marsh, who all sit comfortably in the top 25.  Jorja Hinson-Tolchard, Celine Chen and Amie Phobubpa are well placed to make the girls cut after consistent and confident rounds today.

After years of juggling border closures, it is clear to see the West Aussie Juniors are well and truly back.
