Vidovich, Gilbert and Clancy lead into the final round in the South West

15th Jul 2021

Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club welcomed in the second round of the 2021 Drummond Golf Junior Classic today with bright skies, challenging gusts of wind and a full field of keen junior golfing talent.

Seventeen year old Logan Vidovich, a member of Mandurah Country Club has maintained his lead in the boy’s competition, sharing the top spot with Gosnell’s Josiah Gilbert who had round of the day shooting a 70.

Logan narrowly missed out on qualifying for the WA Open last year, and since then has steadily been progressing and improving his golf, gaining as many playing opportunities as possible. He shows some maturity, patience and commitment well beyond his years, and some serious practice in the past year is starting to pay dividends.

The competition will be tough tomorrow. Former champion Joe Buttress is hot on the heels of talented Gilbert and Vidovich by only one stroke. Buttress secured the Mandurah Junior Bowl and Gosnells Junior Open titles last week and is on form. With eight boys within five strokes of the lead, tomorrow’s win is still very much up for grabs.

Lake Karrinyup’s Sheridan Clancy increased her lead in the girls competition second round, breaking away from the pack to secure a four stroke cap over Joondalup’s Mia Lawson.

The greens were tough today, and the mud! I’m just going to play steady tomorrow. I was worried about my form after just getting out of two weeks quarantine, so happy with how I am playing, shared Clancy.

After the extreme rainfall this week, the slippery wet conditions at Dunsborough today posed a challenge for all participants. Ken Gao will regret wearing those smart white trousers which didn’t look quite as polished at the end of his round. Nedland’s junior Riley Gott opted to remove his shirt to avoid mud splatter on his final hole. Gott’s second shot was in a small muddy creek, which didn’t phase him to tackle a wedge shot onto green to make par, and keep himself pretty clean and tidy in the process.

All twenty six participants in the Crunch & Sip Tour enjoyed the course and hospitality offered by Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club today. Nine year old Lucas Beagley, fresh from a hole in one recently on his home turf Rockingham GC, carded a sweet nineteen points in the Crunch and Sip 9 hole Stableford round. The excitement to get playing from these developing juniors is contagious, and with some serious talent in the Junior Tour shows great promise for the golfing community ahead.

Tomorrow’s final round of the Drummond Golf 54 Hole Junior Classic will tee off bright and early on the magnificent fairways of Busselton Golf Club. We wish all the juniors the best of luck tomorrow and hope the kind spirit, fair competition and good sportmanship continues in the closing match.
