17th Oct 2020

West Australian, Brody Martin powered to the lead in Round Two of the 2020 Nexus Risk WA Open at Royal Fremantle Golf Club. The twenty five year old professional finished with a 2 stroke lead over top ranked amateur Hayden Hopewell.

Brody was evenly matched with WAGC’s Haydn Barron at the turn, both at -3, however Martin made the charge in his final nine securing a further three birdies to take the lead. The Perth golfer won the 2017 Nexus South-West Open at Bunbury Golf Club and the Peel, Harvey and Port Hedland Pro Am’s in 2018. At Royal Fremantle today, Brody carded an impressive 68, putting him in a strong position for the final round tomorrow.

I felt very comfortable on the greens today, especially inside 10 feet and played sensibly off the tee. Tomorrow I will be sticking to the same game plan, maximising my opportunity to make birdies. The WA Open is a fantastic event in the golfing calendar, particularly at this time of year. The golfing conditions are perfect.

Royal Fremantle’s lead amateur Hayden Hopewell made a move today into second position with a strong round of 69. He holds a one stroke lead over state team mate Haydn Barron, and number one ranked professional Brett Rumford.

Today the Nexus Risk All Abilities Challenge commenced with six of the state’s leading golfers with a disability competing in 36-holes for the inaugural WA Open All Abilities Championship.

Lake Karrinyup member Nic Panos holds the lead after Round 1. Nic had an impressive front nine with a birdie on the challenging dog leg hole five. Two strokes behind is Melville Glades Golf Club member Tony Coates who is the only Western Australian with an all-abilities world ranking.

2020 WA State Amateur winner Kirsten Rudgeley confidently made the cut to for the second year in a row in the WA Open. Playing off the men’s tees, this year Maddison Hinson- Tolchard will make it another record with two females playing in the final 50.

The Final Round will commence tomorrow morning at Royal Fremantle Golf Club at 8:20am.
