Juniors Stars prepare for Drummond Golf Junior at Hartfield

6th Nov 2020

Some of Western Australia’s best young golfing talent will tackle the challenging fairways of Hartfield Country Club this month for the 2020 Drummond Golf Junior Amateur Championship.

Juniors from all over the state will compete in a 36 hole stroke play format on Sunday November 15th.

This coveted title has previously been won by the likes of Hannah Green, Min Woo Lee and even back to newly inducted member to the WA Hall of Champions Terry Gale and each year produces outstanding performances by some of our best WA juniors.

Fresh from strong performances at the recent WA Open, Joondalup’s Tom Addy, Aldrich Potgieter, Ian Pienaar and Joseph Buttress will be key performers to watch fighting out for the title in Junior Boy’s.

Host club, Hartfield will be represented by their 2019 Men’s Club Champion, sixteen year old Oliver Cranny and his thirteen year old brother Ben. Only in his third year of golf, Oliver has a wealth of course knowledge and experience on the Hartfield course.

“When to hold back, and when to go for it at Hartfield will be the challenge for the juniors,” shared Oliver. “Hole 15 is a long Par 3, with a tough new green. The dog leg left on Hole 16 Par 4 is a risky one to take driver. You can make the green if you pull it off, but if you don’t it generally means a lost ball.”

Lake Karrinyup’s Sheridan Clancy has been a consistent performer all year and will be a strong match up against Joondalup’s Celine Chen and Amie Phobubpa for the Junior Girl’s Title. “I’m going in with an open mindset, planning to work hard and grind through the 36 holes,” shared Clancy. “I have really been working hard on my long game, getting some additional length which should benefit me well on the long Par 4’s at Hartfield.”

Fourteen year old Celine Chen is a regular at Hartfield and knows the course well. “I was disappointed to not make the pre qual for WA Open, but this is my next challenge. There is some tough competition amongst the girls. Amanda Gan and Valerie Khuu both play at Hartfield regularly, and Amie and Sheridan are very steady. I am just going to stick to my plan, do my exercises and focus.”

Entries for the Drummond Golf 2020 Junior Amateur Championship have been extended and will close on Monday 9th November at 5.00pm. Open to boys and girls under 18 years as of the first day of the Championship with boys’ maximum GA handicap 18.0, girls’ 27.0.
