Joondalup dominate Division One Men’s Pennant final

30th May 2021

Joondalup Country Club claimed the men’s golf division one pennant after a dominant performance against Lake Karrinyup in the final today.

The form team throughout the qualifying rounds, Joondalup made the most of their home-course advantage, taking the final 5-2 after winning four and halving two of the seven 36-hole matches.

In wet and windy conditions, it was young guns Aldrich Potgieter and Gareth Steyn who put the first points on the board for Joondalup with comfortable wins.

Joondalup no.1 Connor McKinney then beat Joe Owen 8 and 6 after taking a 5-up lead through the first 18 holes.

And when Tom Addy beat Nick Curnow 4 and 2 it delivered Joondalup the required four victories to claim the pennant after previously winning the title in 2009 and 2010.

Simon Liddell, leading amateur at last week’s Cottesloe Open, was the sole winner for Lake Karrinyup after he edged out Tom Botica 4 and 3.

The remaining two matches went down to the final hole, with Lake Karrinyup’s Frazer Bone and Fabio Trichilo halving their matches against Tony McFadyean and Tom Hulme, respectively.

Joondalup captain Tony McFadyean paid tribute to his young teammates after his side lost only 10 individual matches all season.

The pressure was on us today with the home-course advantage,” McFadyean said.

But with the talent we have in our side, we knew we could get the job done.

Guys like Aldrich Potgieter and Tom Addy, they’ll be the rocks of the side for the future.

You can’t hold these young guys back when they’re chasing their dream.

Division Two came down to the wire between finalists Bunbury and Hartfield. Hartfield’s Paul Chappell and Jason Edwards had strong early wins 5/4 , and with it looking like Tim Gilotti and Matt Simmons had things under control for Bunbury, the balancing matches could have gone either way. Darkness was setting in, but the Bunbury boys got the job done, winning the match 4-3 securing their spot in the Division One competition in 2022.

The Bunbury gents were “thrilled” to have had a hard fought win, and to have made this landmark step for a Regional Club to join Division One Metropolitan pennants. They have played superbly all season and have a contagious team spirit.

Melville Glades had a confident Division three finals win 6-1 over Meadow Springs. All participants, and Golf WA Managing Director Gary Thomas thanked Joondalup for sharing their outstanding course and hosting this tremendous finals event.

Congratulations to all Division Four-Eight Men’s Pennants finalists today, and our thanks to The West Australian Golf Club, and Mandurah Country Club for hosting.
