Jones and Ahnantakrishnan win Junior Matchplay

24th Jan 2014

The Golf WA Junior Matchplay tournament wrapped up on Friday at Nedlands Golf Club in blustery conditions after two hot days of qualifying, with Cameron Jones of Royal Fremantle and Alysha Ahnantakrishnan winning the Division 1 Championships.

Cameron Jones continued his dominance from the qualifying rounds with a 7&6 victory over Ben Sheehan. Jones was a cut above the competition during the Matchplay event, with back to back 6&5 victories to qualify for the final.

Unlike the Boys’ matchup, the Girls’ final went right down to the final hole, with Alysha Ahnantakrishnan holding off a spirited Jessica Whitting comeback, to hold on to win 1-up on the final hole. Ahnantakrishnan held a 4-up lead early on the back nine, but Whitting gradually pegged Ahnantakrishnan back. Whitting went agonisingly close to squaring the ledger on the 17th, narrowly missing a chip-in as Ahnantakrishnan missed a 10ft putt that would have secured her the championship.

Other divisional winners on the day included Jack Patterson, Isabell Utama, Tip Snowden, Rohan Foster, Benjamin O’Callaghan and Tyreece Jenkins.
