Some of WA’s top male golfing talent enjoyed magnificent conditions at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on Sunday, for the fifth round of the Division One Men’s Pennant competition.  With only two rounds to go, Joondalup sit top of the leaderboard by two points over The West Australian Golf Club.

Next week will be a critical round, where these two come up against each other for the first time.  WAGC had a loss last week to Royal Fremantle, who seem to be hitting their stride late in the season, but WAGC are on form having a 6-1 win over Mandurah at LKCC this weekend.

Joondalup have two tough matches ahead before the finals decider, the first against WAGC, then Cottesloe, however these boys have some strong fight managing to secure a nailbiting win over Lake Karrinyup 4-3 despite their home course advantage.

Lake Karrinyup’s number one, Joe Owen was steady and strong to secure a win over Joondalup’s talented Connor McKinney, and LKCC’s Simon Liddell showed his match play expertise defeating Josh Greer confidently 4&3.

JCC’s Aldrich Potgieter is currently in outstanding form.  Fresh from a superb performance gaining second place in ACT at the Australian Junior Championships, Aldrich breezed through pennants defeating Matt Bowra 6&5.  The team has depth, with experienced Tony McFadyean having a confident win 6&5 over Todd Gault, Gareth Steyn 1UP and young Tom Addy fighting it out to the 20th hole to defeat Nick Curnow and seal the team win for JCC.

Cottesloe continue to perform strongly in the competition, and the match up in the final week of McKinney vs Hanrahan-Smith will be first class golf viewing.  Next week the likely line up of WAGC’s talented Haydn Barron (winning 8&6 this week) vs McKinney will be an exciting watch, as will Potgieter vs Pehlic who both hold WA Amateur Titles.

The 2021 Women’s Pennant Season commenced at Royal Perth Golf Club on the weekend with some strong talent in the field.  Lake Karrinyup CC have a solid line up with young Sheridan Clancy in top spot, followed by experienced WA Senior Amateur Champion Carmen Palframen.  The ladies had a confident win over WAGC, 5-2 to start the season strong.

Mount Lawley, flag winners from the last four seasons are the team to watch.  Led by Kirsten Rudgeley who was recently awarded the prestigious Karrie Webb Scholarship, the team has depth and confidence defeating Royal Fremantle 6-1.

We look forward to some exciting matches next week as Melville Glades play host to the Women’s Division 1 Round 2.
