Thirty-two clubs were represented at the weekend at the 2020 Aglime of Australia Rural Bronze hosted by Donnybrook Country Club. The club is steeped in history with a bustling clubhouse. Friendly volunteers and a toasty pot belly stove welcomed women from as far afield as Carnamah and Esperance. Golfers from across the State came together to compete for the prestigious Lady Court trophy and to celebrate many years of friendship.
Jan Austin from Albany Golf Club clocked up her fourteenth Rural Bronze cap. Jan commented, “I just love this event, meeting up with everyone. It’s all about the camaraderie and these lovely ladies. I was never going to play this stupid game, but I now play five times a week with no electronic buggy. My kids think I’m crackers, but I’ve never been fitter!”
The girls from Wandering Golf Club were out in force and cleaned up the trophy table. Steve Carr, General Manager of Aglime Australia presented Di Warburton with the 36-hole Stableford Lady Court Trophy on a count back from teammate Maria Densham, both with solid 71-point scores. Lisa Dick from Maylands, and Dot Carmody from Dunsborough performed consistently to take out third and fourth positions.
The Gladys Hawkes Shield Teams Event was again awarded to the Wandering ladies, with Maria and Dianne pipping Jo Haub and Jane Dudley from Denmark by one point. The seven-strong team from Wandering were delighted with their success and only wish they had one more night in lovely Donnybrook to celebrate! The Country vs City Team Trophy remained safely in the Country girls’ hands, yet to ever make its way into the Metro area in its history.
Leanne Elliss from Jurien Bay enjoyed her first Rural Bronze, “I loved this event and I will definitely be back again. I have played with such lovely ladies and we have had so many laughs. Thank you, ladies, your kindness, friendship and true joy of the game is what makes this event such a success.”
An award of a different type was presented at the Saturday evening celebration, the highly coveted prize for best costume. Donnybrook is known as the apple capital of the West, so it was only fitting that the theme be ‘apples’. Thinking outside the box the quiet bunch from Bolgart stood out with their ‘New York Big Apples’ alongside a shiny ‘Golden Delicious’.
A huge thank you to the Donnybrook Country Club for hosting the 2020 Aglime of Australia Rural Bronze, and our Sponsor Aglime of Australia for your continued support.
