The Smarter than Smoking GolfWA Junior Tour teed-off for the 2019 season on Friday, January 25. Fifty-five enthusiastic young golfers were greeted by perfect conditions at Royal Perth Golf Club and the competition got off to a successful start with some impressive golf being played.

The Smarter than Smoking GolfWA Junior Tour was developed to give junior golfers the opportunity to progress their skills in a fun, friendly and welcoming environment. The tour also gives these young golfers the chance to play on some of the best courses that Western Australia has to offer.

This morning’s opening round saw children ranging in age from 5 to 12 competing across four different divisions. The 5 and 9 Hole Tiger Tees offer shortened holes for players that don’t hold an official GA handicap. 9 Hole Modified Stroke offers a step-up in competition and the 9 Hole Stableford Division is open to players with an official GA handicap.

As always, each tour event finishes with a skills challenge and rules quiz. This morning saw the kids test their abilities in a closest to the pin chipping contest and finished with a question about one of the new 2019 rules of golf.

Thanks must go to the Royal Perth volunteers that gave up their time to assist with marshalling and chaperoning. It is fantastic to see the club support and encourage a new generation of golfers. Thanks also to the parents who attended, supported and got their kids involved in the tour.

GolfWA would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Healthway and Smarter than Smoking. Their continued support of this tour allows kids to improve their golf and grow their passion for the sport in a healthy and safe environment.

The next Smarter than Smoking GolfWA Junior Tour event takes place on February 25 at Pinjarra Golf Club. If there are any questions about the 2019 tour, please contact Billie Burvill at
