2012 Australian Men's Interstate Teams Matches

WA Men's State Team

New South Wales prevailed over Tasmania to win the 2012 Australian Men's Interstate Teams Matches at Royal Adelaide Golf Club for the first time since 2007.

The New South Wales side defeated the Tasmanians 5.5-2.5, ending their hopes of a first men's title since 1977.

In the second Consolation Final, Queensland narrowly defeated Western Australia.  The WA Men finished last in a tight, keenly fought series won by NSW (who WA defeated during the round robin matches).

"This was one of the closest series in recent times with only 3 1/2 individual games separating top from bottom after the qualifying games," said WA team manager Barry Price. 

"No player from any state went undefeated and WA being the only side to defeat the eventual winners NSW, the final standings didn't do justice to the effort put in by the team".

"There were some fine individual performances throughout the series and this was backed by solid support from the rest of the team. With a good blend of experience and youth in this year's team, and the line between success and "the rest" being so close, the knowledge gained can only be good for us in the future. We look forward to next year!"

Player Background

The 2012 Men's State Team to compete in the Australian Interstate Teams Matches in South Australia in May was announced following the finals of the State Amateur Championships on Sunday March 18 at Mount Lawley Golf Club. The team is:-

Michael Dennis, recipient of the 2011 Paxton Average title will be representing the State for the 10^th time at the Open level and will Captain the team once again.

Oliver Goss, recent State Amateur Champion and member of the winning Trans Tasman Cup team will be competing in his third Interstate Series. Goss has been building off a strong 2011 where he had wins at the Handa Australia Cup, Nedlands Junior Masters and Royal Fremantle Open. He has also been selected to the 2012 Junior National Squad. Daniel Hoeve and Ryan Peake will also be returning to the team to make their 3^rd Interstate Series appearance.

Brady Watt, recent State Amateur Runner-up and 2011 Lake Macquarie Champion will be competing in his 6^th Interstate Series.

Ray Chow, runner up in last year's State Amateur Championship will be making a return to the series for his second appearance.

Jarryd Felton claimed the 2012 Junior Match Play Championship and is currently ranked 8^th in Australian Junior Boys. Curtis Luck closed out the 2011 season with victories at the State Junior Championship, Srixon Junior Championship and Tournament of Champions. Both Felton and Luck will be making their Senior Interstate Series debut.

With only two new faces this year, the Men's team will be looking to build on their impressive performance last year where they went undefeated, missing out on the final by only one solitary individual match.
