History

Darwell Cup

Best Gross

Presented by the South African team Manager (Mrs. Darwell) in 1953 after they had visited Western Australia at the end of the Australian visit.  The team had seven weeks in Perth where they played in the Australian Championships and a match against an Australian Team, as well as exhibition matches.

They were entertained extensively, the by South West and Great Southern Clubs, including going to Katanning where they took part in a mixed event.

They had almost a fortnight after their last official event before their ship sailed.  They were extremely grateful and took up a collection and presented Women's Golf with a cheque, to buy a trophy for the State Championships in addition to presenting the Darwell Cup for the veterans event - GROSS.

The Cup was replaced in 1989 because the original had become very fragile.  It was originally called Mrs. Darwell's trophy.

The Veterans Cup - Mrs O.Negus Trophy

Best Nett 18 Holes

The Main trophy for this event.

In 1938 when Mrs. Negus captained the first State Team to travel away, she had already been State Champion five times.  The trip was subsidised by money raised by two Golf Balls, held in 1936 and 1937, and a levy of one shilling per player.

The team went to Adelaide to take part in the Gladys Hay Teams Event.

She was also the first Western Australian to be chosen in an international team.  She was a Life Member of WA Club and served on Womens Golf Executive.  She presented the trophy for this event in 1951.

In 2003 The Veterans Cup became the Seniors Cup in line with Womens Golf Australia's events and in 2009 the age was dropped to 55 from 60 also in line with GA events.
