Stieger Continues Winning Streak At State Amateur
Matt Stieger (NSW) has taken out the 2011 SmokeFree WA Men's State Amateur Championship in a nail biter that went to an extra hole. Ray Chow of Gosnells Golf Club put forth a tremendous effort to push the Match Play to an extra hole, but Matt was able to claim the title with a birdie on the 37th hole.
Matt played an all round solid match and was very consistent throughout the tournament. He made some very timely recovery shots to maintain the close battle between he and Ray on the final day.
Ray Chow of Gosnells Golf Club finished as Runner-Up but not without putting up a fight. Ray dropped an intimidating 10 foot putt on the 30th hole to keep the match square and then made an amazing flop shot on the 36th hole from what spectators considered to be "sawdust". This brought him back to within 1. Unfortunately Ray's 2nd shot in the extra hole found him in the bunker and ultimately caused him the heart breaking loss.
Both Men played extremely well in the 2nd round of the finals, especially considering they had to contend with the wind. In the end, Matt Stieger's long drives and solid chipping was enough to seal the victory and claim this year's State Amateur Championship.
Matt Stieger was competing after coming off a victory at the Australian Amateur Championship in Victoria. He is a member of the National Squad (Tier 1 Level) and currently the Number 1 ranked Amateur in Australia.
Seward Claims Stroke Play At State Amateur Championship
Ben Seward of the Cottesloe Golf Club finished on top of the leaderboard narrowly beating out Michael Dennis (RPGC) and Matt Stieger (St Michael's) by a 1 stroke margin to claim this year's Stroke Play title.
Ben set a course record on his first round of the event shooting an astonishing 65, and backing that up with rounds of 69, 73, 80 (287) to edge out Michael Dennis and Matt Stieger by a single stroke.
The 2011 SmokeFree WA Men's State Amateur Championship was held at the Melville Glades Golf Club from April 5 to 10.
