History of Women’s Country Week Country week has been running since the 1950’s and continues to be the most popular event of the year with the Metropolitan Clubs giving up their courses for this week in September. The ladies arrive in Perth to enjoy their week forgetting about their work and any woes, play on beautiful courses, spend a bit of money and enjoy the culinary delights and night life of the big smoke.

Country Silver Salver 36 Holes Gross Originated to cater for the 15 – 18 handicap range i.e. those not eligible for State Championships. Country Bronze Championships The predecessor Women’s Golf WA approached Mr. Linton (Silversmith) on 24/8/1956 to make a suitable cup for this event. Gladys Hawkes Sand Greens Cup Miss Gladys Hawkes was State Handicapper for 22 years. She was concerned for the country golfer and initiated Executive representation in Country areas at her own expense. She “lived and breathed for country people” and did all she could to help them in any way possible. Miss Hawkes was given Life Membership in 1979 and died in 1989.
