A picture-perfect day greeted the 126 strong field for this year’s Steelscene Mandurah Amateur Open at Mandurah Country Club and the course had little defence against the quality of players that were assembled. A total of 46 interstate players have journeyed to the West this year and the depth of talent was evident in the scores returned on Day 1.
Eleven players broke the par of 71 with local hope Hayden Hopewell firing a four-under 67 which included a three under run at the start of the front nine, his second nine, highlighted with an ace on the 136m 3rd hole. A perfectly struck 52-degree wedge pitched past the stick and backed up into the hole for a 1 on the card.
Hayden was joined on 4 under by Queenslander Lochie Coleburn who closed his round with a 3 under run over the last 4 holes and Edward Donoghue from Victoria who’s round of 5 birdies and a lone bogey also has him sharing the lead after the first round.
Joshua Gadd (NSW), Ronan Filgate (TAS), Lewis Hoath (QLD) and WA’s Tom Addy all sit 1 behind on 3 under. Tom from Joondalup Country Club showed off his short game talent throughout his round but as all golfers suggest it could have been better.
Day two will see similar good scoring conditions on the tight Mandurah layout that is in pristine condition. Let’s see how many red numbers are on that leaderboard at the end of the day.
