The Regional Seniors tournament is one of the most popular events on the WA golfing calendar and the 2019 edition of the tournament, held at Denmark Country Club, has proved to be no exception.
220 women from across WA nominated for the event and made the journey down to the beautiful coastal town of Denmark.
The Regional Seniors tournament is as much about friendship as it is about playing golf.
Denmark Country Club was in outstanding condition, a testament to the hard work that club employees and volunteers put in before the tournament.
The course looks easy at first glance due to the absence of any bunkers. However, many ladies will attest that the raised greens and thick fescue fringes more than makeup for the lack of bunkers.
Two Denmark locals, Lesley Owen and Heather Falconer, made the most of their home course advantage and both put together impressive first rounds on Thursday to walk off with 37 points each.
With the first round of golf out of the way, it was time to get down to the serious business of the tournament – the much-anticipated dinner party.
Denmark did a wonderful job of transforming the clubhouse into a hippie paradise that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the ’70s. All the ladies looked absolutely wonderful in their brightest and wildest ‘Age of Aquarius’ inspired costumes.
Despite looming early tee times on Friday morning all the attendees had a fantastic time at the dinner and the dance floor even got a good workout later in the evening.
Mother Nature turned on a beautiful day on Friday. After a chilly start for the early tee times, the sun shone all day and conditions for golf couldn’t have been better.
Pinjarra Golf Club’s Meredyth McLarty played consistent golf across both days and held the clubhouse lead for a long time with 62 points to her name.
In the end, the home course advantage proved to be the difference and Lesley Owen played a fantastic second round to record another 37 points and walk away with a total of 74 points and the Britannia Cup.
Jenny Camac made the long journey down from Carnamah Golf Club and her efforts were rewarded with a fantastic Friday round of 36 points, netting her second place overall.
GolfWA and all the competitors would like to extend our thanks to Denmark Country Club’s Graham Buckland, Christine Randall and all the volunteers for ensuring the event was a success.
Next year we head north to Geraldton Golf Club for the 2020 edition of Regional Seniors on May 7th & 8th. We look forward to seeing you there!
