The Men’s and Women’s Senior Amateur Championships of WA will once again head back across the Nullarbor after Ken Brewer (Lynwood CC, NSW) and Helen Pascoe (Buninyong GC, VIC) triumphed in perfect conditions at Hartfield Golf Club.
Hartfield member Michael Dunsmore started the third and final round with a 4-stroke lead but unfortunately faded late in the day which opened the door for Brewer.
It came down to the final hole and Brewer held his nerve to drain a birdie putt and claim the title.
Speaking after his victory, Brewer said, “Yesterday I played really well – I did a few dumb things every now and again. I knew I was one behind coming into the 18th. Michael went left into the trees and I managed to play a very solid shot about a metre from the pin. I think my last putt was the best I have had in three days!”
Brewer is no stranger to success having won the NSW Senior Order of Merit for the past three years as well as a second place finish at the 2018 Australian Senior Open.
Helen Pascoe surged into the lead on the first day of competition and never looked back on her way to winning her maiden WA Senior Amateur title.
Pascoe was challenged when last year’s champion Jacqui Morgan made a charge in the final round. Any chance of a late upset was shut down when Pascoe hit a wonderful approach on 18 leaving only a short putt to claim the title.
Manjimup Country Club member Evan Sewell bounced back from a disappointing second round to finish in a tie for second place with Hartfield local, Michael Dunsmore.
Sewell won the ensuing playoff to finish as the top Western Australian in the field. Having only recently turned 55 it is likely that Sewell will be challenging for the title for many years to come.
Denmark Country Club’s Sharon Dawson finished as the top Western Australian female in the field.
Thanks must go to everyone at Hartfield Golf Club for running a wonderful event. The course was in fantastic condition and all of the players were extremely complimentary of the club and the facilities.
