Hot and humid conditions greeted the 98-strong field that took to Hartfield Golf Course on day one of the Senior Amateur Championships of WA.
The course was in brilliant condition and the greens have recovered beautifully from recent coring and maintenance work.
Manjimup Country Club member Evan Sewell has only recently turned 55 and so far he is enjoying his first chance at competing in the Senior Amateur.
Sewell had a first round of 75 (+3) and sits equal top of the leader board alongside David Bernhardsen Jr from WA Golf Club.
After his round, Sewell said: “ I played solid all day and was fortunate enough to have the Vice Captain of Hartfield CC caddying for me. This course has a fabulous challenging layout and I managed to keep it in play all day hitting fairways and greens.”
It is also tight atop the Women’s side of the draw with Robyn Lamb (Lake Karrinyup Country Club) and Helen Pascoe (Buninyong Golf Club, VIC) both having first-round scores of 79 (+6).
“Tomorrow I will reassess where I use my driver. With all the doglegs in this course, it is very easy to over hit. I came for a practice round here about a month ago but I had to really rethink today and make some last minute adjustments,” Lamb said after her round.
Last year’s champion, Jacqui Morgan, sits just two shots back of the leaders. Morgan is in fine form after winning last week’s Bowra & O’Dea Senior’s title.
Speaking after her round, Morgan said: “It is a completely different course to last week at Karrinyup… the Par 4’s are extremely long here and the wind is very tricky to read.”
The action continues tomorrow out at Hartfield Golf Club. Scores and the draw can be found here.
