Favourable weather conditions continued on day two of the 2019 WA State Amateur Championships at Wanneroo Golf Club, with little or no wind, a clear day and fast running fairways and greens greeting players.

Queenslander Zach Maxwell of Virginia Golf Club leads after shooting a 68 for a total of 141. When asked after his round, Zach stated, “Today I grafted really well with the wind and stuck to my course guide more thoroughly. Yesterday my approach shots were poor and I didn’t make the same mistakes today.  The 14th/15th holes were my turning point, I birdied both after 10 pars and a bogey…”

Three competitors were tied in second place after day two; Hayden Hopewell, Royal Fremantle Golf Club and recently announced member of the GolfWA State Squad; Jordan Jung, Mount Lawley Golf Club, and Joshua Greer, Joondalup Resort and Country Club.  Also announced as a member of the Western Australian State Squad, Jordan commented, “…tomorrow I will try not to think about the score, play like today, keep consistent.  I love match play, it’s a lot of fun. The course is solid, and the greens are rolling nice [sic].”

In the women’s field, Kathryn Norris of Mandurah Country Club heads into the match play ranked first having played two rounds of 70. Kathryn said, “my aim is to always make a good swing, every shot. Today I felt more confident with the wind, and I used it more. Tomorrow I will play my own game, play the best I can. I don’t like giving any holes away!”

Kathryn is closely followed by Abbie Teasdale of Royal Fremantle Golf Club who is keen to reclaim her 2018 title. Abbie told us after her day two round, “I just tried to play it the same as yesterday and be consistent.”

Stephanie Hall from The Australian Golf Club, New South Wales put herself in contention after an impressive 13 shot improvement in the second round.

Today’s play also saw a family rivalry unravel on the greens as Jack Patterson pushed his father, Paul Patterson (both of Cottesloe Golf Club) into a playoff. Paul prevailed and there’s every chance that Paul and Jack could face-off in the quarterfinals of the match play on Saturday morning.
