Jose De Sousa and Georgia Shears both saw their runs to the match play phase of the New Zealand Amateur Championships ended at Russley Golf Club in Christchurch on Friday.
De Sousa, who made the cut at last month’s Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open, qualified for the knockout stage in third place after rounds of 69 and 70 and defeated Reid Hilton 2&1 in their last-32 clash.
The Gosnells member’s bid to reach the quarter-finals was, however, undone by a faltering start to his afternoon match-up against Hayato Miya as he fell four behind after five holes and could not repair the damage to lose 7&6.
Western Australia captain Shears suffered a 2&1 defeat to Rose Zheng after a tight contest.
The Wanneroo member, who qualified through the stroke play in 17th place, was one down at the halfway point and remained in touch through the back nine without managing to get the result.
Two Australians advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament, which is in its 124th year, with men’s defending champion Louis Dobelaar securing a dominant 3&2 win over Mako Thompson in their last-16 clash.
Jade Shellback upset third seed Chantelle Cassidy on the 19th hole to book her place in the last eight where she will meet Caryn Khoo. Dobelaar is due to face De Sousa’s conqueror Miya.
