Western Australia’s women produced the feelgood story of May’s Interstate Series on home soil as their youthful squad almost claimed an unexpected place in the final.
Five of the six-member squad had competed at the Junior Interstate Series a month earlier – when they finished fifth – but defied expectation at Royal Fremantle with a third-placed finish highlighted by defeating defending champions Queensland on the opening day.
The men endured a mixed week at Melville Glades where a fourth-placed finish fell below the expectation of captain Kiran Day’s team.
A first-up defeat to Victoria, when they had been in control, left them with little room for error for the remainder of the week and further defeats to Queensland and New South Wales meant the state’s 18-year wait to end their title drought would continue on.
Victoria claimed a double for the week as their women’s team went through the tournament unbeaten to claim the title by beating New South Wales in the final. The Vic men’s team, led by Zach Murray, upset New South Wales in the final after the Blues had won all of their round-robin matches.
